21st December:
Staying on the Edge
With Children on the Edge, it’s all in the name. The organisation
focuses on children leading forgotten lives in barren,
dangerous places. Those without parental care, neglected or persecuted by their
governments, ignored by international media and out of reach for large overseas
agencies.
As a smaller organisation we can often get to places that others
can’t reach and tread the path less trodden. This is why they are currently
researching opportunities in North Korea.
After a visit to Rason City and North Hamhyong Province by their
director and Asia Regional Manager, the charity has connected with some local
partners who reach more than 5,500 children in dire need in one of the world’s
most isolated and impoverished countries.
in response to the widespread famine in North Korea and in a country
which thrives on secrecy, these partners have slowly forged relationships and
built trust with key officials and teachers. As a result, they have access into
parts of the country, which were previously considered unreachable by any
international organisation, and Children on the Edge are planning a strategy of
support for 2014.
