18th December: King
for a day
When these
three came to the Children on the Edge Centre in Uganda they introduced
themselves as Moses, Isaac and ‘boy’. ‘Boy’ is seen here wearing the crown. A
serious amount of the children who arrive at the Centre come with no name.
In Soweto it’s common for children to have lost their parents and live with
grandparents who are so overwhelmed that they soon forget names.
The first
thing the Centre staff do is find out names and work on developing the
children’s sense of identity. The ‘boy’ here in the photo wearing a crown which
he made on this year’s summer playscheme, just one of the creative ways that the
project encourages creativity and builds self esteem.
The boy’s name is Joseph.
