Fabulous Fabrics

ISAK has spent the last year developing a line of fabulous fabrics and we have used the designs to produce a range of kiddy and toddler clothes that will be available from January 2009. The fabric designs are; Penguin, Ichi-ni, Geisha, Tokyo and Kimono. The names betray the Far East cuts that the clothes are inspired by. They have been made for comfort, practicality and, of course, beauty!

The patterns will give rise to; Romper suits for babies and baby blankets, dresses for our little Geisha girls, track suits, Kimono dresses and bedding for all toddlers. The woolen blankets feature the Penguin design in Turquiose and Chocolate. We hope you love them as mush as we do.

Keep your eyes on the blog for updates as to when they will be available.

More than a Cup

In Scandinavia drinking is a very important social and personal event. Coffee is essential for an event to be "Hyggeligt", meaning to create a cosy atmosphere. We at ISAK believe that putting a handle on a cup spoils its aesthetic. We enjoy a sleek appearance and a cup that can be "cupped".
We have also added an oak lid to the cups to keep warm drinks warm or if drinking outside (as we like to), to keep unwelcome guests out of our latte. The lid also acts as a coaster if required to protect your tabletops. They also make lovely little storage jars.

The cups come in 2 designs; Lovebird or Leaf, to match the Birchwood serving trays. All available from the ISAK shop and selected retailers.

Lovebird or Leaf cup £8. Large serving tray £25. Small serving tray £15.

Blossom & Bill's Recommendations No.6

6. Tableware: Kurikyu Magewappa. These exquisitely handcrafted pieces of tableware are made from almost paper-light Akita Cedar. You can see and feel the craftsmanship in each article whether it is a simple rice bowl or a teapot. They look delicate but are robust from the painstaking manufacturing process that can take several weeks. We honestly believe that food tastes better when served from good tableware.

BALTIC is an international leader in the ambitious and distinctive presentation, commissioning, development and communication of contemporary visual art

BALTIC presents a changing programme of exhibitions across 4 diverse gallery spaces. BALTIC does not have a permanent collection.

BALTIC exists to enrich people’s lives with a programme that deepens their knowledge, understanding and love of contemporary visual art while increasing and broadening its impact.

BALTIC’s Artist Residency Programme forms an integral part of our activities and is an important element of BALTIC’s role as an originator of new works as well as providing unparalleled opportunities for artists to engage with the local community.

And on top of all these you can pick up an ISAK gift from the shop to brighten up your home.

4. Tableware: Warm Tea Set by Tonfisk. We love that Tonfisk take the most basic products and give them a new design twist. The combination of different materials, and solving an aesthetic vs function problem through new design is something we really admire. Tonfisk products are created with a vision of not producing yet another shape but a whole new idea. As Tonfisk say, "We feel that there is in all people an appreciation of creativity and inspiration."

Looks good & works well. This sort of tableware works as table decoration.

Workboard Wall Decorations

Introducing a new product by ISAK. The Workboard Wall Decorations have been designed to look superb on any wall, and also, encourage interactive learning of the alphabet and numbers.
Children can sit with the parent and practice their letters and numbers. The boards can be drawn on with soluble pens or crayons and wiped clean with soapy water before being put back on the wall. They can also be used as workboards for doing homework or drawing.

No need for a frame or mount, the boards can be placed on a lip shelf or hung by a nail.

The Abc and 123 Wall Decorations fulfill ISAK's desire to produce beautiful objects that have purpose and function. We are very happy with them and will add to the range next year.

Wall Decoration 50cm x 35cm. £40 each.

4. Utility: Pedal Waste Separator by Hailo. Not the most innovative or attractive product but Blossom & Bill like this design because of its form & function. A bin should not draw attention to itself. It should be sleek, unobtrusive and practical.
The Trento® öko 19+11 offers the ideal solution for separating biodegradable waste from the rest of waste. The smaller, green inner bin holds 11 litres - ideal for biodegradable waste. The larger, black bin will even hold up to 19 litres. This is handy if you live on a higher floor. The bins become full at roughly the same time and you can empty both bins at once.

There are more attractive bins but who wants to be aware of a bin?

Sancta Lucia

The Italian Saint Lucia (light-bearer), who was killed for her faith in 304 AD in Syracuse, is celebrated in the Nordic countries, particularly in Sweden.

Dressed in white, with real candles in her hair, she leads white-clad singing processions in homes, workplaces, schools, churches, clubs and associations. Contests appoint the Lucia of Sweden and of various regions.

Lucia also pays early visits to the Nobel Prize Laureates in their hotel rooms singing about Lucia bringing light to darkness and the hope of a new dawn.

Blossom & Bill's Recommendations No.2

2. Toys: take-g wooden toys. Take-G toy’s is a ‘toy’ maker which mostly deals with wooden crafts hand-made by Takeji (Take-G) Nakagawa. His motto is to bring wooden beauty and quality into life in his own style. In his own words;

"When I think of ‘future’, I cannot help thinking of ‘past’ at the same time. Trees take long time (tens and hundreds years) to grow and show us their beauty . I think that I have responsibilities as a craftsman and an artist of breathing new life into these trees. I have a job to link 100 years in the past and 100 years in the future through my work. This is my values toward my work.
I wish my work, which carries such values, can grab imaginations of children of the past, present and future."

These are quite simply exquisite hand made wooden toys. They contain that sizzle of magic that all great toys have, to feed a young imagination.

Blossom & Bill's Recommendations No.1

Here are 10 of the items they have spotted on their travels to brighten up your home. Number 1 is a minimalist piece of furniture that can be indoors or outside and we think is just lovely.

1. Furniture: The Union Bench by i do design. Each piece is individually numbered and signed with only 100 planned to be made. We think the red looks fantastic. It takes one week to make each piece that weighs in at only 60kg. Made in a small studio in Kalmar Sweden.
