Sancta Lucia

The Italian Saint Lucia (light-bearer), who was killed for her faith in 304 AD in Syracuse, is celebrated in the Nordic countries, particularly in Sweden.

Dressed in white, with real candles in her hair, she leads white-clad singing processions in homes, workplaces, schools, churches, clubs and associations. Contests appoint the Lucia of Sweden and of various regions.

Lucia also pays early visits to the Nobel Prize Laureates in their hotel rooms singing about Lucia bringing light to darkness and the hope of a new dawn.
